Death of Pretend

I lost a friend today, no they did not pass away
They did not refuse to stay nor even ran away
I just lost a friend today

While standing still they found the words to hurt
They found the words that gutted everything that ever mattered

While just standing there they made it clear they no longer cared
So I lost a friend today

With stunned response I made a desperate attempt to save them
Yes to save them from their hurtful words, their cruel thoughts

With tears in my heart I tried my best to show them
To show them that friendship once found is very hard

So I lost a friend today and with that said never again will they stay
Such a beautiful day and it had to turn out this way
Last night I slept with such glorious thoughts
Only to be awoken to the terrible death of forever a friend

Though it saddens me to say, wishing things had never been this way
Today I gained sight, today I took flight, today I’ve decided to fight
I will not roll over and die, I am no longer that guy
Today the truth replaced the void where once stood a friend
And this old willow that I am will never again be made to bend
Because today I lost what all along I thought was a friend

I know now that there was more to her, is more to her
I need to have been more to her, I needed to have seen beyond my
infatuation with her
