It’s 7 AM
coffee in hand
and already the traffic is building in my head
God knows I’d rather be in bed
Horns needlessly sounding
giving no alternatives or directions
just the noise of foolishly thinking
we’re moving ahead
In the distance up and beyond the horizon
there’re looks of disrespect
the slights, the endless fights
And all I wish to do is to signal
and move to the right

I want to head for slower lanes
I want to take time to enjoy the ride
I want to count the things I pass while
making each a valued part of my past
I want to signal and move to the right
It’s time for changing lanes

Often we spend a lifetime being the host
but sometimes the things
we want the most
needs us the least and the things
we least want needs us the most
In the midst of traffic
we sit in the company of pretense
all empty shells of ghost

I want to head for slower lanes
I want to take time to enjoy the ride
I want to count the things I pass while
making each a valued part of my past
I want to signal and move to the right
It’s time for changing lanes

Today I felt a pain
at first thinking it would be easy to sustain
by night fall it had taken aim
its full intent was to leave me lame
but my soul is a reservoir of musical notes
each and everyone once having played
its bitter sweet melody
now having formed a chorus of
survivable memories

And if tomorrow comes
finding me no longer here
would my empty chair hold memories dear
would my absence slow down the time
would your words be kind
would you just respectfully change gear
would you simply push along
right back in the traffic jam

For in as much
as the many promises we’ve made
Fast lane or slow,
our destination will dictate
only one direction to go
Matters not the secrets we keep
nor the games we play
we’ll not a day longer stay

we spend a lifetime being the host
but sometimes the things
we want the most
needs us the least and the things
we least want needs us the most
In the midst of traffic
we sit in the company of pretense
all empty shells of ghost

I want to head for slower lanes
I want to take time to enjoy the ride
I want to count the things I pass while
making each a valued part of my past
I want to signal and move to the right
It’s time for changing lanes
